International Self-Care Day: Small Daily Choices That Make a Big Difference

Looking for a simple way to prioritise your wellbeing? Download our free 30-Day Self-Care Challenge and Self-Care Checklist to help build healthy habits one day at a time.

Every year on 24 July, International Self-Care Day reminds us that looking after our health isn’t something we do only when we’re unwell; it’s something we can practise every day.

The date, 24/7, symbolises that self-care is something we can embrace 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While healthcare professionals are here when we need them, many of the choices that influence our health happen long before we step into a doctor’s consulting room or hospital.

Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive wellness retreats or dramatic lifestyle changes. Often, it’s the small, consistent habits that have the greatest impact on our physical and mental wellbeing.

What is self-care?

Self-care is the intentional practice of looking after your physical, emotional, and mental health. It means making choices that help you stay healthy, reduce stress, and improve your overall quality of life.

Self-care looks different for everyone. For some people, it means going for a morning walk. For others, it might be spending time with loved ones, reading a book, getting enough sleep, or simply taking a few quiet moments to recharge.

The important thing is finding healthy habits that work for your lifestyle and making them part of your routine.

Everyday ways to practise self-care

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Consider incorporating some of these simple habits into your daily life:

🚶 Move your body through regular physical activity.

🥗 Eat a balanced, nutritious diet.

💧 Stay hydrated throughout the day.

😴 Aim for enough quality sleep each night.

🧘 Take time to relax and manage stress.

🌳 Spend time outdoors and enjoy nature (such as practising forest bathing).

📚 Make time for hobbies that bring you joy.

❤️ Connect with family and friends.

📱 Take regular breaks from screens and social media.

🩺 Keep up with routine health check-ups and screenings.

Small, positive changes can build healthier habits over time.

Self-care is also knowing when to seek help

Looking after yourself also means recognising when you need support.

If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, persistent fatigue, changes in your vision, prolonged stress, or symptoms that concern you, don’t ignore them. Seeking advice from a healthcare professional is an important part of self-care.

Preventative care, early diagnosis, and timely treatment can make a significant difference to your long-term health.

Take our 30-Day Self-Care Challenge

To celebrate International Self-Care Day, we’ve created a 30-Day Self-Care Challenge filled with simple daily activities designed to help you build healthy habits one day at a time.

Whether it’s taking a short walk, drinking more water, practising gratitude, or making time to unwind, every small step contributes to better wellbeing.

We encourage you to download the challenge, invite your family or friends to join you, and see how many healthy habits you can build over the next month.

Discover what fills your cup

We’ve also created a Self-Care Checklist to help you reflect on your current routine.

Ask yourself:

  • What activities do I enjoy?
  • How often do I currently make time for them?
  • How often would I like to?

Sometimes simply identifying the activities that help us feel our best is the first step towards making them a regular part of our lives.

Every day is an opportunity

International Self-Care Day is a wonderful reminder that investing in your health doesn’t require perfection—it requires consistency.

Whether you choose to go for a walk, prepare a healthy meal, get an extra hour of sleep, or finally schedule that overdue health check-up, every positive choice matters.

At Advanced Health, we believe that better health begins with everyday decisions. By taking care of yourself today, you’re investing in a healthier tomorrow.
