Advanced Health
Advanced Health strives to be the industry leader in the provision of day surgery services through its network of day hospitals, inspiring confidence by focusing on the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. As of 2023 we are the only group of day hospitals with international certification in Health & Safety and Quality (ISO 9001 & 45001) in South Africa (click here for more information).
Day hospitals are modern healthcare facilities providing short-procedure surgical services and diagnostic procedures which need to be performed in a sterile environment on a same-day basis. As a result of advanced surgical and anaesthetic technologies, more than 60% of all surgical interventions can be performed on a same-day basis in day hospitals.
Advanced Health South Africa was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2014, and has been establishing itself as a leader in day surgery across South Africa.
Our facilities are modern, compact and equipped to render same-day surgical procedures efficiently, with a strong focus on the quality of surgical outcomes at extremely competitive rates for patients and medical schemes.
Doctors working at Advanced Health facilities are dedicated, ensuring that patients receive the best care possible. The company takes great care in providing doctors with the best technology and service to ensure quality outcomes.
Day Hospital Advantages
Day hospitals across the world are transforming the surgical experience for millions of patients by providing them with a more convenient alternative to hospital-based surgery, achieving the highest quality standards and positive patient experiences cost-effectively.
Quality outcomes are the result of rapid advances in surgery and anaesthetic technologies. Patients and surgeons benefit from streamlined admission and surgical procedures performed in facilities which are compact, designed for the range of services rendered and staffed by appropriately qualified skilled professionals. In South Africa, the utilisation of day hospitals lags behind countries such as the United States and Australia.
This is mainly as a result of the funding structure in the country, which traditionally favoured general or acute hospitals. As a result of the cost-effectiveness of day hospitals, without detriment to quality and safety, medical schemes have begun advocating the use of day hospitals for short-procedure surgery. It is difficult, if not impossible, for patients to get a similar cost advantage from a hospital, even when quality and standards of care are equal. Procedures performed in day hospitals are broad in scope.
These include knee, shoulder, elbow, hand, eye, skin, spine, cosmetic, gynaecological, urological, ear nose and throat, as well as dental and general surgery and a wide range of diagnostic procedures that need to be performed in a sterile environment on a same-day-in-and-out basis.
The focused design of day hospitals makes it possible for surgeons to perform more procedures in any given time than in a general hospital. Post-operative follow-up before discharge is also expedited by the compact design of the facility. Patients benefit from the faster admission and preparation procedure and recuperation in the comfort of their homes. Facility access and parking are also much less cumbersome than at large hospitals. The family type atmosphere at an Advanced Health facility and the conduct of the staff attract surgeons and patients.

Our History
Advanced Health strives to be the industry leader in the provision of day surgery services through its network of day hospitals, inspiring confidence by focusing on the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective healthcare.
During the early 1990’s the private hospital operators functioning in South Africa demonstrated concern about the competition coming from day clinics. As a result, these groups implemented strategies in terms of which the medical scheme movement changed the tariff structure for both hospitals and day clinics in such a way that these were detrimental to day clinics.
During 2005 Life Health Care terminated the lease agreement, which applied to Medgate Day Centre. A similar event occurred in respect to the Witbank Day Clinic (“WDC”) which was closed down by Life Health Care. During 2009 the original Witbank Day Clinic was refurbished and re-opened under the new name of Emalahleni Day Hospital. Advanced Health South Africa was established as the holding company for the South African operational entities and was absorbed into the Advanced group of companies.
